What is a planetarium?

A planetarium is a theatre built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy, space science and the night sky, or for training in celestial navigation.

When was it established?

Established in 1965 by the State Engineering Corporation and declared open on 1st of February, 1965 for Ceylon Industrial Exhibition to introduce the latest technologies specially to show the capability of creating a night sky.

Who was the architect?

Former Dr. A. N. S. Kulasinghe.

What is the total seating capacity of the Sri Lanka planetarium?

Seating capacity is 500 and placed centrically.

How is night sky created in the planetarium dome?

Night sky is created by the universal projector or Digital Power dome projector system. Both projectors have this capability.

What kinds of projectors are used?

Universal Projector.
Power dome Projector system
